Statement of Purpose

To outline how Seashells Nursery maintains security on the nursery premises to ensure the safety of both the nursery children and staff.

Throughout the guidance the term parents is used to include all main caregivers.

Door Security

All doors within the nursery have locks which are positioned high on the door out of the reach of the children.

Once the children have been welcomed into nursery by a member of staff, the staff member will lock the door in the foyer which separates the foyer and the garden area, using a bolt which is positioned out of the reach of children.

The Seals Room and Pups Room nursery doors will also be locked at all times when the children are within the nursery rooms.

External Black Gate

This will be locked prior to the children exiting the nursery building to enter the garden area during free flow play.

At the end of the session and/ or when the children have returned to the nursery building a member of staff will unlock the gate, to allow the parents to enter to collect their child.

Greeting visitors

If the nursery receives a visitor during session time, during free-flow play the visitor will be met by the member of staff who is on outdoor duty.  All staff are aware that photographic ID must be displayed before the visitor can be granted entry to the nursery.  If the visitor does not have ID and/ or it is an unplanned visit then staff will ask the visitor to remain outside of the nursery whilst they contact the Nursery Manager.  The Nursery Manager may then contact the company for whom the visitor works for confirmation of their visit.  Only when the identification of the visitor is confirmed will they be granted entrance to the nursery.

If the nursery receives a visitor during session time, when the children are inside the building, a member of staff will close the indoor nursery door behind them, ensuring that it closes behind them as they approach the front door. The front door will be opened once the indoor nursery door is closed and the same protocol as outlined above will be followed.

Visitors will not be granted access to our nursery unless we are able to confirm the identity of the visitor and purpose of the visit.

All visitors to the nursery will sign in using our signing in book stored in the foyer and the member of staff who is chaperoning the visitor will provide them with a Visitors pass on a red lanyard which must be worn for the duration of the visit.  This is a highly visible way of identifying visitors within the nursery.

No visitor will be allowed unsupervised access to the children, a member of staff will accompany them for the duration of their visit.

Collection of Children

Upon enrolment at Seashells Nursery all parents must provide names of adults who they have granted permission to collect their child.  If there are people on the list who are not known to members of staff it is the responsibility of the parents to bring these adults to nursery and introduce themselves to staff.  A child will not be allowed to leave with an adult who is not known to members of staff, unless the parent has contacted us and provided us with a password which will be given to the member of staff by the person collecting the child.  If the password provided is incorrect the staff member must contact the Nursery Manager.

If a person arrives at nursery to collect a child and is not on the collection list, a staff member will contact the child’s parents to gain verbal permission for the collection.  The child will not be allowed to leave the nursery until we are given this permission.  The parent must then give written permission on the child’s Personal Care Plan the next time they bring the child to nursery.

When the children are being collected from inside the nursery room, one member of staff will man the main Seals and Pups room doors, ensuring that the door remains closed in between parents/ carers collecting their child.  The parent/carer will approach the staff member, the staff member will open the nursery door and call for that child to leave the room.  If a password is required, this is when it will be given to staff. The staff member will close the door again while the child gets ready and leaves the foyer.  Only one child will be allowed to leave at a time, unless children are being collected together, i.e. playdates or siblings.

When the children are being collected from outside, the children will remain in the garden area, with the garden gate bolted shut.  One member of staff will man the black external gate.  The gate will remain locked.  The parent/carer will approach the gate, the member of staff manning the gate will call for the child to be released from the garden area.  If the child has anything to collect from their box, or inside the nursery, or their jacket or bag they will be allowed to enter the building to collect anything they need.  The gate will remain locked whilst this is happening and will only be opened when the child is ready to leave.  The gate will not be opened to allow any other children to leave during this time.  Only one child will be allowed to leave at a time, unless children are being collected together, i.e. playdates or siblings.
